Learning how to make gelato at home really isn't as daunting as it may seem. This recipe from the chefs of La Scuola di La Cucina Italiana, our Milan-based cooking school, calls for just two simple ingredients: 500 ml. (2¼ cups) whole milk and 175 g. (7 oz.) sugar.
Follow this simple step-by-step guide for how to make gelato at home.
Step 1
Combine the milk and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring continuously until the sugar has completely melted. Then let the mixture cool and pour it into the gelato/ice cream maker so that it can be stirred and turned. If you don't have an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into a cold steel container.
Step 2
If you've placed the mixture in a steel container, turn it several times and stir it every 30 minutes or so to prevent ice from accumulating on the surface. The gelato's success depends largely on the quality of the milk. It's best to opt for a fresh, natural product, and to verify its places of origin.
Step 3
Once the set time has elapsed, take the ice cream out of the freezer and distribute it in individual cups. You can choose to garnish it with black cherry or chocolate syrup or enjoy it in all its simplicity.
