Glitz meets the montane in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the sublime ski destination in the Dolomites. Though the exceptionally jagged limestone mountain range in northeast Italy is part of the Italian Alps, in several ways, it feels a world away. Influences from Austria, its northern neighbor, abound in the cuisine, landscapes, architecture, and culture.
Located at the base of the Socrepes ski lifts, Chalet Tofane serves the Cortina 2021 pizza topped with Ampezzo-style potatoes (seasoned with onions and speck). The historic chalet’s new owners went all out for the après-ski, or the aperitivo time after the lifts have closed, complete with a DJ set, Champagne, and oysters.
Speaking of the après-ski, the lavish backdrop of the exquisite Cristallo, a Luxury Collection Resort and Spa, is an optimal spot to unwind and revel in some post-skiing cheer. Cocktails bear the names of local wonders, Dolomiti Fizz, the Tofane Express (a group of peaks), or the Enrosadira, a blend of Marsala and rose liqueur named for the ora purple (purple hour) the Dolomites take on at sunset. The hotel’s La Stube 1872 is a must-visit for anyone seeking local specialties such as canederli (dumplings), barley soup, and venison. Also, Saint Hubertus, one of Italy’s 11 three-star Michelin restaurants, is about a two-hour drive from the town.
